This violin commission was made to the
actual specifications of a full size violin. Much credit must be given to
the staff of “Strings” in Hitchin who could not have been more helpful
during this project. It is made from steel sheet, rod and box section has
had to be used to add some strength to the body. Nuts and bolts are used for
the string adjusters on the neck with the bolt heads removed and finger
adjusting friendly ears welded on instead. All parts have been polished
before final assembly and then again briefly before lacquering took place.
The strings, bridge and part at the base
where the strings attach are all genuine violin parts.
The bow was also made to the correct
dimensions and uses the horse tail and adjuster mechanism from a proper
violin. The stand allows them to be displayed nicely.
Though this violin was made as accurately
as I could, imagine my amazement and delight when I went to pick it up from
“Strings” (who kindly strung and tuned it for me), and the girl
explained that the bow is too heavy and has no feeling but then picked up a
standard violin bow and proceeded to play a beautiful!? tune on it. She did
say that it is rather too heavy to play regularly though.
