SteelySam Steel Craftsman

New items for 2009
Displayed here are engine men, women, dogs, cats, mice and some different birds.

These are all made from car, (and some motorbike) parts.

Often with these, people will send me pictures of their particular pet and I will make the sculpture to encompass some of the specific features of their animal. I intend these as garden sculptures but many people keep them indoors.

There is a selection of mouse clocks which are all one-off hand made. On some of these I have painted either the whole mouse, or just his eyes. These are made from sheet steel and use ball bearings as eyes. They contain a simple battery operated clock mechanism and have a small bracket to aid hanging.

There are 3 smaller engine men standing on plinths which were made as awards for Norfolk Council.

I have also made 3 full size engine men which were fixed to plinths and given as awards by a recycling company called Eastex.

Both of these companies approached me again the next year for more, similar work.

There are also some pictures of the truck I built a few years ago and the 1960 Ford Prefect which I built more recently for my wife. I also own a modified 1970 Jaguar XJ6. When I am not doing commissions and have some free time I like to wrestle with old cars.

Since the summer 2008 I have emigrated to Madrid, Spain so it is more difficult to produce commissions. However I am still interested in commissions and can still produce work, but not to the kind of deadlines I used to work to.

The violin which is on the site is one of two which I built. The specialist “Strings” shop in Hitchin which sold one of these recently had offered to sell a steel double bass for me if I built it. Sadly my move to Madrid has currently stopped the manufacture of this but I still hope to make this some time.

The hand made glass petalled flowers are usually sold with a few flowers in a frame. Customers request the number of flowers, colours for the glass and whether they want a steel insect, However I have made singular flowers on a stem which can be put into a flower pot. These are useable inside or outside and tests have shown they can cope with English weather only rusting slightly.
